Malaria: control vs elimination vs eradication.

In The Lancet today, we report the presentation of this year's Lasker-DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award toTuYouyou, a Chinese pharmacologist, for discovering the antimalarial drug artemisinin in the 1970s. Breakthroughs in malaria research such as hers, together with increased funding and control efforts during the past decade, have led to impressive reductions in mortality in many developing countries.
