Tackling domestic violence: is increasing referral enough?

Problems are sometimes divided into simple, complex, or chaotic. Intimate-partner violence or domestic violence-an important contributor to death, disability, and illness for women of child-bearing age-is a complex problem bordering on chaotic. It requires complex solutions that involve players across the health system. In The Lancet, Gene Feder and colleagues show in a cluster-randomised trial that an intervention of intensive primary care training can greatly increase the documentation by general practitioners of intimate-partner violence and increase referrals to specialist advocacy services over 12 months.
