In the face of a looming downturn in spending on the UK's National Health Service (NHS), any notion of mental health services saving money, yet at the same time improving standards and reducing stigma, might seem paradoxical verging on the quixotic. If psychiatry is the Cinderella specialty of the NHS, acute adult-admission wards are perhaps the poorest relation of all within mental health services. Investment in inpatient services has been historically poor and acute admission wards easily fall victim to resource shortfalls. Users of psychiatric services lack much of the advocacy and public sympathy enjoyed by other groups of patients.
