In response to Valbona Mirakaj and Peter Rosenberger, there was no difference in the numbers of tracheotomies between the two groups: 16 (29%) in the awake intervention group and 17 (29%) in the sedated control group (p=O.98). When any surgical intervention was done, standard anaesthesia and analgesia were provided in both groups. Any difference in delirium or in the results because of lack of proper anaesthesia or analgesia before surgical intervention is therefore highly unlikely.
