Medicine should aim to meet the present and future health needs of society, and only through research can this be achieved. So it is good to learn that, in its first decade, the UK's Academy of Medical Sciences, with its emphasis on translational research, has had a positive effect on UK medical science (Feb 2, p 360).1 For many of us the Academy is pretty much a closed book, but your inspiring Editorial made me attempt to find out more about it.
