When Carol Brayne was in her fourth year of medical school in the UK during the late 1970s, she was introduced to the story of how researchers wove togetherthreads of evidence to prove that exposure to asbestos caused mesothelioma. For the young student from North Norfolk the epidemiological story was fascinating. "It was very exciting to see how the detective work had gradually brought together all the evidence", she remembers. "Among the rest of the medical teaching, it really stood out."
