He said that the events at Santa Rita could not have taken place if there had been any real vigilance on the part of those in charge of safety monitoring. However, president of the region, Roberto Formigoni, speaking at a press conference on June 11 defended the region's health-care monitoring system, saying it was "beyond any doubt among the absolute best". He said that it was thanks to the systematic and intense work of the regional health-care monitoring body that the authorities were alerted to the possibility of serious irregularities at the clinic in the first place.
