The changing face of heart disease prevention.

Great progress has been made in reducing morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular diseases in high-income countries. For example, in this week's cardiology-themed issue, which will go to the annual European Society of Cardiology meeting in Munich, Harvey White and Derek Chew show that treatment of acute myocardial infarction has evolved substantially over the past 25 years. With a wealth of data from clinical trials, pathophysiological studies, and risk-score analyses, most patients with known cardiovascular disease, at least in developed countries, will receive optimised treatment and care-one of the great success stories of modern high-technology medicine.
