Therapeutic hypothermia for birth asphyxia in low-resource settings: a pilot randomised controlled trial.

In 2005, the Lancet Neonatal Survival Series highlighted the fact that 4 million babies die in the neonatal period; 99% of these deaths arise in low-income and middle-income countries. Globally, 23% of neonatal deaths are directly related to birth asphyxia; additionally, birth asphyxia leads to a substantial burden of long-term neurological disability and impairment.
