35 years of Japanese policy on rare diseases.

In the June 14, 2008, issue of The Lancet, recent policies on rare diseases in western countries were reviewed. In Japan, the National Programme on Rare and Intractable Diseases was launched in 1972. Since then, the government has promoted research and expanded support for patients with rare and intractable diseases.
