In 1997, The Lancet published a special supplement dedicated to the emerging pandemic of comorbidity between diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The risk of death from cardiovascular disease, and morbidity from non-fatal myocardial infarction and stroke, is increased in patients with diabetes, and, similarly, the presence of cardiovascular complications is associated with an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Despite commendable efforts to understand the patho-physiology of these comorbidities, and to develop effective therapies for prevention andtreatment, cardiovascular disease remains the major cause of death in patients with diabetes#
