The stainless steel industry remains optimistic that a demand recovery will take place this year. The question is over the extent of the upturn. Early indications show strong order intake in most regions but also highlight the risk that temporary setbacks may remain a feature of the market. The new year began on a very positive note for many Asian traders and end-users, reflecting a strong revival in demand for stainless steel in China. But sentiment has turned in February, due to concerns over monetary tightening. Meanwhile, mill orders have also picked up sharply in the USA and Europe but the upturn continues to be driven predominantly by distributor re-stocking with only limited advances in real demand.
