Re: The Effects of Dutasteride and Finasteride on BPH-Related Hospitalization, Surgery and Prostate Cancer Diagnosis: A Record-Linkage Analysis

Editorial Comment: The issue of whether there is clinical superiority between finasteride and dutasteride seems to have been settled by the 1-year EPICS (Enlarged Prostate International Comparator Study) results and a study at Cornell with 5-year followup. Each of these series clearly demonstrated no advantage regarding improvement in International Prostate Symptom Score, peak flow rate, prostate volume or prostate specific antigen reduction. EPICS showed new onset sexual dysfunction when patients were converted from finasteride to dutasteride after year I, and our study revealed significantly worse sexual adverse events with dutasteride at 5 years.
