Editorial Comment: These authors assessed associations of testosterone (T), dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and estradiol with all cause and ischemic heart disease mortality in older men. Participants were community dwelling men 70 to 89 years old who were residing in Perth, Western Australia. Optimal androgen levels were a biomarker for survival because older men with midrange levels of T and DHT had the lowest death rates due to any cause, whereas those with greater DHT had decreased ischemic heart disease mortality. These data add fuel to the fire by adding some degree of controversy to the role of T in male mortality.
