Re: Incidence, risk factors, and complications of postoperative delirium in elderly patients undergoing radical cystectomy

The authors prospectively analyzed the outcomes of 49 geriatric patients who underwent radical cystectomy specifically to identify risk factors for postoperative delirium. Using a mini mental status examination in all patients, they concluded that older age as well as a lower mental status score made patients prone to delirium. In addition, those patients who demonstrated postoperative delirium had higher rehospitalization and reoperation rates. Given our aging population, expanded studies are needed to validate these results and establish potential treatment with pharmacological interventions.
