To the Editor: We read this article with great interest. This study includes a large number of patients with a long followup of 33 years. Previously Cheville et al reported that clear cell renal cell carcinoma (RCC) has a poorer prognosis compared to papillary and chromophobe cell RCCs. Due to the frequent use of radiological imaging modalities, renal masses are increasingly being detected incidentally and at smaller sizes.2'3 As stated by Leibovich et al, the stages of the subtypes of RCC were different in each group in this study. Clear cell type RCCs seemed to have a higher pathological stage compared to the other histological subtypes in this study, as well as a higher Fuhrman grade. According to these findings, one might predict that clear cell RCCs are detected at a more advanced stage compared to the other histological subtypes.
