Cotton is sociologically and economically important for smallholder producers in many developing countries since it is a deeprooted rotation crop that provides seasonal work and cash flow in rural areas. Many of these countries place heavy reliance on cotton as a source of foreign exchange earnings and nearly all the governments became heavily involved in their cotton industries because of its strategic importance.
