In recent years, we have seen single-mode systems displacing multimode technology from several keyapplications, such as "verticals" on cell towers, data centre links, and building/campus LANs. At thesame time, laser-optimized multimode fibre has proven to be a robust technology, with cost-effectiveVCSEL (vertical cavity surfacing-emitting laser) sources well matched to the fibre capabilities. At theannual OFC conference and exhibit in March, several sessions and exhibits highlighted high-speedtransceiver technologies, including 100-Gbps modules for multimode links. These devices have thepotential to extend multimode technology into new applications, such as 100-Gbps links in data centres.
