Russian Textiles: Optimism And Opportunity

The Russian textile industry's efforts to improve quality and efficiency in a post-USSR economy will help it compete in the post-quota marketplace. Many positive changes have taken place in the Russian textile industry. The product range has expandedconsiderably, quality has improved, and many enterprises manufacture fabrics in accordance with European standards, because out-of-date equipment has been replaced. There are still many problems, however. Since 2000/01, the years analysts deemed criticalbecause of the sharp growth of manufacturing in this sector, there has been a recession, though not considerable. Cotton yarn production decreased 2% in 2002 and 7% in 2003. The situation for cotton fabric has been more optimistic, as weaving mills have increasingly used imported yarn.
