The latest trade statistics indicate that the significant winter shutdowns in South Africa caused exports of high-carbon ferrochrome to fall by 55 percent y-t-d in July, from 3.3m tonnes to 1.5m tonnes. Indeed, some mills have resorted to requesting material from other domestic producers to meet their orders in recent months, as demand has been robust throughout the third quarter. Consequently, there are very low industry-wide ferrochrome stocks in South Africa, as plants have steadily run down their own inventories.
