Doe Run Peru could restart its La Oroya smelter within the next 30 days, according to a 28 April statement from the Peruvian Energy and Mines ministry. A target date was initially set for the company to resume operations by 29 April, but the company failed to finalise agreements with its suppliers and a strategic partner. The company, which has a legal obligation to finish an environmental cleanup and to restart its smelter by the end of July, has offered the smelter as a guarantee that it would honour its commitments or risk a takeover by the Peruvian government. The smelter has been largely idle since last March after banks cut Doe Run Peru's credit lines because of worries over its financial difficulties. La Oroya produced around 26,000t of refined lead in 2009, down from 114,000t in 2008.
