摘要

Another development prompted by the high copper prices of the late 1980s was a reduction in the size of coins. Norway reduced the size of its 1 and 5 kroner coins in 1997 and in 1996 introduced a smaller 50 ore coin, also changing the coin from cupro-nickel to bronze. These new coins were more in proportion with the small 10 kroner coin had been introduced for the first time in 1983 and the 20 kroner coin, which was introduced in 1994.In 1992, Mexico introduced a new coinage system with smaller coins as part of a wider monetary reform, which saw one new peso replace 1000 old pesos. Details of these new coins are shown in the accompanying table. As much as 10,000 tpy of copper was used in the production of Mexican coins in the early 1980s, but the copper content now is believed to be around a third of this level.
