Lack of Shady Plant Material Leads to a Growing Business

Shady Oaks Nursery of Waseca, MN was founded in 1982 by Clayton Oslund, an avid gardener and collector of rare hostas and other unique perennials. According to his son Gordy, current owner of Shady Oaks Nursery, Clayton's growing operation was established out of a desire to find a well-rounded source of hard-to-find plants for himself as well as other plant enthusiasts. "My father found a lot of the plants he could not buy locally would grow well in his shady yard and there wasn't a good source thathad a strong selection at the time," said Oslund. "So, he began a small mail-order business out of his home which expanded as the years went on."
