The sale of Barrick Gold's Zaldivar copper mine in Chile is continuing to generate interest,with a BHP Billiton-led consortium emerging as a possible contender. BHP Billiton'sEscondida mine is nearby, and the option to combine the operations may be considered,although Zaldivar is higher cost and lower grade. Furthermore, water access and powercontracts held by Zaldivar may benefit Escondida, which is facing water restrictions.
