Twenty-seven inbred lines of maize (registration nos. PL-327 to PL-353, and PI 641224 to 641250) were released by the Hawaiian Foundation Seeds (HFS) of the University of Hawaii. They were bred specifically to incorporate, by backcrossing, resistance to Maize mosaic virus. The inbreds were chosen based on their outstanding performance in international hybrid trials and in trials coordinated by the HFS. Inbreds Hi42 to Hi45 are solely from breeding in Hawaii, while the others originated from public maize breeders in 10 countries. High genetic tolerance of common rust (Puccinia sorghi) and southern rust (P. polysora) characterized most inbreds of tropical origin..
