Shell granted new drilling permits

SHELL'S new application for oil drilling permits in the Chukchi Sea in Alaska has been approved, after a ship containing a vital capping stack arrived in the area. The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) first only conditionally approved Shell's exploration plans in Alaska's Chukchi Sea, but said that until the arrival of the capping stack, designed to rapidly seal the well the event of a blow-out, the company could not drill into oil-bearing layers. Shell has now begun drilling deeper with the drillship Polar Pioneer (pictured).
