Africa's first AD biogas plant opens in Kenya

Heralded as a model for energy security as plant displaces imported fuels, Tropical Power has begun operating Africa's first grid-connected anaerobic digestion power plant - a 2.4 MW facility in Nakuru County, Kenya. The Biojoule plant will be fed by a local 800 ha vegetable farm able to supply 150 t/d of biomass feedstock for the digester, which produces biogas that is burned to generate electricity. The project will help to displace expensive imported generation fuels including diesel and heavy oil from Kenya's distributed power mix, says Tropical Power chairman Mike Mason.
