Sir, In response to Mr Evenson's letter on population growth (Comments, tce 858), I agree that technology has the potential to greatly increase the supply of food, water and energy, although the extent of diminishing returns and environmental degradation is arguable. Furthermore, it is clear that infrastructure and services have not kept ahead of population growth and is reason enough for concern. In response to Evenson's question 'So what's the answer?; I would suggest that reproductive healthcare and education is not 'tried and failed' but tried and tested, as proven by the fertility rate of 1.8 across the high income countries.
