Evaporative cooling systems emit a visible plume a significant portion of the time. Even though a cooling tower plume contains mostly pure water and hardly any pollutants, it is often seen as a nuisance. This paper describes the psychrometry of the plume under typical operatingconditions and reviews how to specify no visible plume. Several technologies exist to reduce or abate the visible plume and these techniques will be shown. A new technology will be introduced which has the capability of saving water while inherently reducing the plume. Based on this new technology, an additional technology is proposed to abate the plume under more severe operating conditions.
