In the past decade significant progress has been made in the treatment of the HIV infection due to the availability of potent antiretroviral drugs. The current treatment strategies aim at inhibiting the viral replication as completely as possible by using a combination of three or more antiretroviral drugs, usually from two different drug classes. This combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) has dramatically changed the clinical outcome of HIV, leading to decreased mortality and morbidity. Beside long-term side effects and suboptimal drug potency, the emergence of drug-resistant variants is a major obstacle to obtaining a sustained virologi-cal response. With the approval of maraviroc [MVC) in 2007, a new class of antiretrovirals was introduced into HIV treat-to standard bulk-sequencing, the 454 Sequencing detects single clones, thereby being much more sensitive [3].
