Concomitant cathodic reduction of 9,10-phenanthrenequinone and 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis(4-chlorophenyl) ethane (DDT), under constant potential conditions, led to new and interesting [1,3]clioxoles through two possible and simultaneous reaction pathways: (1) an electron-transfer from the quinone dianion to DDT molecules, and (2) electrogeneration of a carbene from DDT and further reaction with the 9,10-phenanthrenequinone dianion.
