A general synthetic approach for the synthesis of prelactones and epi-prelactones V and E has been reported using an Evans'aldol reaction as the key step.beta-Hydroxy-delta-lactones represent an important structural motif present in a large number of organic natural products such as mevinolin and compactin,phomo-lactone and massoialactone.
