Morgan Advanced Materials, a global materials engineering company which makes, designs and manufactures a wide range of high specification products across multiple sectors, has worked with radiotherapy systems maker Varian Medical Systems to develop a carbon-fibre couch base to replace the timber one used. Varian required the couch top, used in hospitals in radiotherapy treatment rooms, to neither deflect or sag when mounted by the patient, ensuring the treatment is then delivered to precisely the intended location. Morgan says: "For many years, the most common materials for the couch top was timber, but it was becoming clear that even the hardest of material was not able to offer the requisite strength, rigidity or consistency required. This meant there was a possibility of treatment being inadvertently applied to the wrong areas, rendering it ineffective with considerable cost to the hospital."
