2014 began positively enough: continued economic recovery, news the UK had made and sold a record number of cars, and data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showing construction output had - hang on, what? - gone backwards in November. The construction data was a surprise, but the ONS soothed fevered brows by saying the growth trend was heading in the right direction. Phew.
