Changing weather conditions, environmental concerns and the continued strain on the economy all jump to mind as potential challenges for the fruit packaging industry. But surprisingly a survey conducted by Sharpak Aylesham at Fruit Focus 2013 - a technical event for fruit growers - showed that the need for innovation was the prime concern of packers and retailers. A third (32%) of respondents say it is vital that packaging companies support the fruit business through innovation. When asked more specifically how this can be achieved, responses included shelf-life innovation, new product design, improving the ease of use of products and helping position retailers and producers as market leaders through the innovative packaging they use.
