We agree that as urologic workforce needs increase in a challenging graduate medical education environment, so too must the options for urologic education. High-quality private practices can greatly broaden the urologic postgraduate training experience.Although noted in the editorial, the intent of our study was not to "address the question of whether residents can master the laser vaporization technique in this clinical setting." Rather, we examined the effect of residents on laser prostate surgery outcomes in a private practice setting. Their involvement did marginally increase the operative time but did not adversely affect the surgical outcomes. These data help establish the feasibility and safety of training residents in new surgical techniques in the private, nonacademic, hospital setting.
