First Energy looks to more cost-effective methods of keeping its coal-fired fleet going

Now that it has taken a number of coal-fired power plants offline due to the impact of stricter environmental regulations, First Energy is seeking ways to make the remainder of its fossil units more cost-effective. "At our fossil fleet, we deactivated units at seven of our older coal-fired plants in response to MATS and other environmental regulations that made these plants even less likely to be dispatched," said First Energy CEO Anthony Alexander during a recent earnings call.
