From a coal supplier's perspective, American Electric Power's fuel mix for power generation could be viewed as a glass-half-full or half-empty story. The bad news: Natural gas-fired generation across the fleet has increased approximately 50 percent. Part of the hefty increase is due to natural gas capacity factors for the utility's East region combined cycle units, where generation is more pronounced with the addition of the Dresden generating facility. The East combined cycle generation increased 114 percent during the third quarter and 160 percent for the year-to-date period.
