Metabolix Introduces Biobased PHA Grades as Additives for Polymers

METABOLIX is launching its new line of amorphous polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) grades to be used as performance additives for PVC and PLA. Production of the new materials is underway at a U.S. pilot plant and will ramp up to 600,000 pounds annual nameplate capacity during 2016. "The commercial launch of these new grades of amorphous PHA represents an important development for Metabolix as we advance our business strategy focused on specialty biopolymers," said Johan van Walsem, Metabolix's chief operating officer. "This expanded pilot capacity is strategic for us to support existing customers and open new market development opportunities in our target application spaces."
