Plant regeneration in G. arboreum L. from excised shoot tips and shoot apical meristems was obtained on hormone free-half strength MS medium and half strength MS medium supplemented with 0.2% activated charcoal. Regeneration efficiency on the activated charcoal supplemented medium was not enhanced, however positive effect in the form of induction of healthy shoots was observed. Multiple shoots were induced by transferring shoot apical meristems on MS medium supplemented with BAP (2 mg/l). Upon transfer to the multiple shoot induction medium the primary shoot started degenerating, followed by induction of number of shoot bud primordia. The shoot bud primordia remained dormant on BAP supplemented medium and elongation of shoots was achieved on basal MS medium without BAP. Roots were spontaneously induced on regenerated shoots on half strength MS medium. The meristem based plant regeneration system can be exploited for generation and multiplication of transgenic plants particularly in G. arboreum genotypes.
