Spot Asia-Pacific met coal trade thins ahead of holiday

Singapore—Seaborne coking coal prices were little changed Wednesday as trading activity in China started winding down ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday, with overall sentiment in the market remaining bearish. Platts assessed premium low-vol hard coking coal steady at $138.75/mt CFR China, and second-tier HCC unmoved at $126.75/mt CFR. Meanwhile, there was a 50 cent decline in the value of both pulverised coal injection (PCI) segments. For top-tier coals, most traders and end-users were continuing to eye $135-137/mt CFR China for Australian top brand coking coals. One trading source said he expected spot prices to continue to fall after the holiday, adding he would bid below $138/mt CFR for March-loading cargoes.
