US, Canadian coal prices must compete with Indonesian in Japan: sources

Manila—Although Japanese power utilities are interested in importing more thermal coal from the US and Canada, such materials have to compete with the landed prices of sub-bituminous coal from Indonesia to be able to take a significant market share, industry sources said Friday. Japanese power utilities currently import a token volume of US and Canadian coal. One Japanese source estimates that of the approximate120 million mt of Japan’s thermal coal imports for fiscal 2013-14 (April-March), about 60% originates from Australia, 30% from Indonesia, 8% from Russia, South Africa and Colombia and the remaining from the US and Canada.
