European polyethylene terephthalate producers have rejected the initial monoethylene glycol contract, reported to have settled at Eur1,080/mt FD NWE, as too high and economically unworkable in the PET chain. The contract was initially settled late Tuesday at an increase of Eur135 over the April contract of Eur945/mt FD NWE, with sources reporting a coolant consumer as the buyer settling. “We won’t be agreeing to this-it is too high,” a PET producer said. A second PET producer said it would not be settling at this number either. Although it seems there is some readiness by coolant producers to settle at more than three figures, PET producers did not see themselves in a position to pass on such high costs.
