European general purpose polystyrene spot and contract prices were flat from December, both assessed at Eur1,285/mt ($1,382/mt) FD NWE Wednesday. Feedstock styrene prices for January settled Eur20 lower than December and this pressured PS prices in Europe as converters demanded an equal drop in PS prices. However, major producer Styrolution raised its January offers for PS by Eur20, citing strong demand. A wide cross-section of traders and producers saw the market as stable from December. “You may see a rise in prices if supplies become tight later in January but prices are stable right now,” a trader said. “Several players are yet to return from holidays and the market cannot find a direction,” a PS producer noted. No supply tightness was reported in the markets.
