Asian PET prices fell $5/mt week on week to $840/mt FOB Northeast Asia and $845/mt FOB Southeast Asia Wednesday, reflecting the lower bids from downstream buyers of PET resin. Asian PET and polyester markets were in the doldrums in the fourth quarter of 2015, and Asian PET resin producers said they have since seen an uptick in demand globally but bid ideas have remained low amid weak downstream end-product prices. Asian PET producers had hoped the recent surge in MEG feedstock prices would lift PET prices but a sharp selloff on the Shanghai Stock Exchange Monday, the first trading day of 2016, saw traders selling down MEG futures, triggering a sharp correction in MEG prompt spot prices.
