European polystyrene prices came under pressure from a volatile market in feedstock styrene, sources said this week. Spot prices were assessed at Eur1,575/mt FD NWE, down Eur15 week on week. Contract prices for May, meanwhile, were steady at Eur1,620/mt FD NWE. Trinseo’s polystyrene units in Tessenderlo, Belgium, are set to begin restarting at the end of May. The two units of 130,000 mt/year capacity that began maintenance in April. One would start up in end May and the other in early June. The price of styrene loading 5-30 days forward was assessed at $1,429.50/mt Wednesday FOB ARA. SM prices were assessed at $1,440.50/ mt on Monday. Current prices put the spot market at a 10% discount to the European contract price of Eur1,390/mt ($1,578/mt). This has led to bearish expectations for styrene CP in June, which has filtered into the PS markets, sources said.
