US spot monoethylene glycol remained stable on the week, assessed Friday at 41 cents/lb FOB USG, as market participants discussed continued interest in exporting into Europe. There has been ample interest in shipping product to Europe, a trader source said, but demand has been surprisingly soft as end users have not shown much interest in purchasing. Production issues and ethylene tightness in Europe have created an opportunity to export there, sources have said. The European spot market remained stable this week at Eur1,040/mt FCA NWE as downstream costs have declined and US imports have started to reach the market. A US-based trader expected additional export deals to Europe early next week. Economic indicators have not been strong for the first quarter of the year, and a lack of strong MEG demand in the second quarter suggests the economic sluggishness may persist, a market source said.
