Asian styrene monomer rose $6/mt day on day to be assessed at $1,360.50/mt FOB Korea and $1,384.50/mt CFR China Friday on steady buying amid a stabilizing China domestic SM market. The CFR China SM marker surged $83/mt week on week on the back of active shortcovering Wednesday that had faded by the end of the week. Asian SM prices surged $40/mt Wednesday on a flurry of short-covering by traders squeezed by earlier short-selling despite major exporter South Korea’s heavierthan-usual turnaround season drawing to an end. The price surge came despite major South Korean producer Yeochun Naphtha Cracking Center restarting its 290,000 mt/year SM plant at Yeosu Wednesday after month-long maintenance, marking the end of the country’s unusually heavy turnaround season.
