US spot paraxylene assessments rose $10/mt this week, assessed Friday at $855/mt FOB USG, tracking Asian paraxylene prices. Asian paraxylene rose $9.50/mt this week, assessed Friday at $894/mt FOB Korea and $915/mt CFR Taiwan/China. US market activity continued to be quiet and fundamentals were unchanged, with supply and demand in balance this week. Buying interest on the East Coast continued to be reported this week following shipments fixed to the East Coast from Europe during May, sources said. In downstream markets, demand stemming from the summer bottling season continued to improve, keeping demand in derivative markets steady to bit stronger, but this hadn’t increased PX demand as PTA supply was available for those downstream uses. Paraxylene production economics continued to be unfavorable this week with the MX-PX spread at minus-$15/mt. Market participants typically consider a healthy spread to be around $150/mt.
