Active short-covering for prompt cargoes supported the SM market this week, said sources. South Korean plants are due to come online from maintenance this month, which will likely ease supply tightness, said sources. Seven of South Korea’s eight SM plants, accounting for around 76% of the country’s total production capacity, were shut for maintenance over March-May. Hanwha Total Petrochemicals restarted its 280,000 mt/year No. 1 SM plant at Daesan in end May after maintenance and a capacity expansion, a source said Friday. The plant, which was shut mid-April, is now able to produce 400,000 mt/year of SM.
